Practical Advice For Businesses
Not all advice is good advice
It is not just business that are currently ignoring the new legislation that are under threat. Some companies that are being proactive in trying to achieve compliance are getting their fingers burned by other businesses.
Recently we came across a case from a hotel about the provision of Braille signs. They had a DDA consultant in to advise them on the steps they need to take to become compliant. They were concerned that he had informed them that needed to invest in £3000 worth of Braille signs.
This was made even more absurd by the fact that they only had 32 bedrooms, which instantly set alarm bells ringing about what they were planning to sign and how much they were beginning charged for the actual signs.
It turned out that the consultant was from a company that supplied accessibility products such as Braille signs.
We were informed by a trust Accessibility consultancy, that they had attended a location that had been audited for accessibility and taken all of the steps highlighted in the audit. One of these steps was to install a ramp at on of there fire exits.
They got a specialist company to install the ramp. On further inspection of the installation the ramp it was noticeable that the ramp ended a foot above ground level and dropped in to a patch of muddy ground, which would not be traversable by wheelchair users.
The two examples shown here are by no means isolated cases and the number of horror stories are growing by the day.
To help companies gain a good understanding in the new legislation a number of expert companies have come together to deliver a first of its kind DDA Awareness DAY.
